Scene after ‘Shang-Chi’ credits: Director Destin Cretton explains.

Scene after 'Shang-Chi' credits: Director Destin Cretton explains.

Spoiler warning: Don’t read this story if you haven’t seen “The Legend of Shang-Chi and the Ten Rings,” which is currently playing in theaters.

Throughout “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” there are a few small signs that the 25th feature film from the Marvel Cinematic Universe is actually part of it. As Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) and his best friend Katy (Awkwafina) navigate modern-day San Francisco, they pass by posters depicting the aftermath of “Blip” in “Avengers: Endgame”, in which half of the world’s population suddenly reshaped. Since then, Wong (Benedict Wong) from “Doctor Strange” in 2016 is fighting a friendly match against Abomination from “The Incredibles” in 2008, when the duo first joined the illegal fight club run in a half-finished skyscraper in Macau. Hulk” — This is a teaser that expects the latter to appear in Marvel’s 2022 Disney Plus series “She-Hulk.” And, of course, there’s Ben Kingsley’s delightful comeback as Trevor Slattery, known as the Fake Mandarin, in 2013’s “Iron Man 3”.

But it’s not until the end of “Shang-Chi,” one of Marvel’s characteristic post-credits scenes, that the film fully enters the MCU. Literally: With the help of Wong’s teleporting sling ring, Shang-Chi and Katy enter Wong’s sanctuary from a San Francisco restaurant to discuss the mysterious and ancient origins of the powerful ring now owned by Shang-Chi. As the dazed Shang-Chi and Katie stare, the camera reveals that Wong has contacted Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) and Carol Danvers, also known as Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), for consultation via holographic FaceTime.

They were all bewildered, especially by a mysterious signal emanating from inside the ring. Undoubtedly, these questions will be answered in other future MCU titles. But before hanging up, Bruce pinpoints Shang-Chi and Katy with acquaintance smiles and says, “Welcome to the circus.”

When asked when he knew how the scene would unfold, “Shang-Chi” co-writer and director Destin Daniel Creton gave his acquaintance smile.

“It feels like right before the premiere,” he said.

In fact, Creton said that the “direction” of the scene was being worked on early on. For example, Cretton, who decided to bring Wong back for a fight club sequence, also wanted the character to return to the scene after the credits. Then he was taken to a drunken karaoke room by Shang-Chi and Katy.

“I wanted them all to sit together at the ‘Hotel California’,” Creton said. “But we weren’t sure if it would actually work until we filmed it.”

It wasn’t until the film ended late in post-production that Cretton didn’t know if the Avengers would join Wong in analyzing the ring.

The post-credits scene “goes through a lot of tweaks and updates depending on what’s in development on other shows and movies on the MCU,” Cretton said. “It depends too much on what those characters are doing in the MCU at the time.”

Creton’s personal preference is where the Oscar-winning actor started off Larson’s career with 2019’s “Just Cause”, 2017’s “The Glass Castle” and 2013’s “Short Term 12.” Being on the other side of the galaxy, it wasn’t clear for a while how she would appear on Earth and share a brief story about the unusual gem.

“We talked about it being Brie, but we didn’t know that it could make any sense that Brie could be there,” Creton said. “I mean, it definitely helps for us to land on holographic versions of these characters so they can eventually step back and return to some crazy stuff they’re dealing with. And I have no idea what they’re dealing with. All you have to do is throw an idea, and the only time an idea gets canceled is when it doesn’t logically fit into another idea that permeates that character.”

Ultimately, Cretton shot parts of Ruffalo and Larson in the post-credits sequence as one of the last elements of an additional photo on “Shang-Chi” earlier this year.

“I haven’t seen Brie in a long time, so I was able to catch up with her on set and hang out while she was wearing a Captain Marvel costume. It was very strange, but we had a good laugh,” Creton said. .

The second post-credit scene from “Shang-Chi” at the very end of the credits came together in a much more predictable way. Cretton was shot during a major photo shoot and doesn’t include the Avengers from the past. Instead, the scene shows that “Shang-Chi” is contributing to a bigger MCU.

The scene begins with Shang-Chi’s sister Xialing (Meng’er Zhang) standing in an old bedroom in the huge Ten Rings complex run by her deceased father (Tony Leung). Shang-Chi thinks Xialing is there to dismantle it. Instead, she sits on her father’s old throne as the camera rolls back to reveal that Xialing is actually upgrading the Ten Rings to the 21st century and creating punk graffiti with a décor similar to Macau’s Fight Club. A new and equal complement to warrior women and men training together.

The scene where her father compensates Xialing’s lifelong grudge for ignoring her for Shang-Chi ends with the words “The Ten Rings will return” on the screen. This highlights how central the group is in the current MCU.

It’s fair to say that Xialing’s changes made the Ten Rings a more inclusive organization, but the scene also leaves the impression that the nefarious goal – the unification of power across the planet – is the same.

That’s the impression that Creton isn’t discouraged, but he doesn’t confirm anything either.

“If you think so, I think it’s a fair evaluation.” he said bitterly. “The purpose of this snippet is to create a question.”

Similarly, Creton frowns when asked that Ruffalo’s banner appears in human form rather than a hulked version of “Avengers: Endgame”.

“I do not know.” He said. “is that word?”

However, the director drew the line, hinting that he may not know where Shang-Chi’s ring actually came from or what the signal it sends into space means.

“Of course you know!” he says Then he stops talking and laughs. “I mean, you know, I know enough — I know more than anyone.”

Netflix Should Face Chess Great’s ‘Queens Gambit’ Litigation

Netflix Should Face Chess Great's 'Queens Gambit' Litigation

A judge on Thursday refused to dismiss a lawsuit filed by a Georgia chess master who allegedly defamed an episode of the Netflix series “The Queen’s Gambit.”

Nona Gaprindashvili, a prominent Soviet chess player in the 1960s, sued Netflix in a federal court in September. She challenged a line in the series where Gaprindashvili falsely stated that she had “never met a man”. Gaprindashvili claimed that the line was “extremely sexist and demeaning,” noting that by 1968, the year the series began, it actually faced 59 male competitors.

Netflix tried to dismiss the lawsuit, alleging that the show was fictional and that the First Amendment gave the show’s creators a broad artistic license.

But in Thursday’s ruling, US District Judge Virginia A. Phillips disagreed with the fact that Gaprindashvili had made plausible allegations that she had defamed her. Phillips also argued that fictional works are not exempt from defamation lawsuits if they defame a real person.

“Netflix does not cite cases that exclude defamation claims depicting real people in fictional works,” Phillips wrote, “and the courts are not aware of it.” “The fact that a series is a work of fiction does not protect Netflix from liability for defamation if all elements of the defamation exist otherwise.”

‘Queen’s Gambit’ is based on the novel by Walter Tevis in 1983 and tells the story of Beth Harmon, a fictional American who became an international chess champion in the 1960s. In the final episode, set in Moscow, Harmon defeats her male rival. The chess announcer explains that her opponent underestimated him. Her only peculiarity about her is actually her sex. And it’s not just in Russia. She has Nona Gaprindashvili, but she is a women’s world champion and has never played against a man.”

Netflix relied on two chess experts to get the details right, and claimed that the show’s creators didn’t offend Gaprindashvili.

The streamer’s lawyer argued that “the reference to the plaintiff in the series is not intended to disparage her, but to acknowledge her.”

In her ruling, Phillips noted that the show’s theme had to do with breaking gender barriers. But she said the show could be seen as building on the fictitious Harmon’s achievements by ignoring the real Gaprindashvili’s.

“The average viewer would ‘disparage the achievements of the plaintiff’ of Line as plaintiff asserts.[ying] ‘The stigma that women bear the symbol of inferiority’ could be overcome by the fictional American woman Harmon, but not by the plaintiffs,” the judge wrote. “At least, that line ignores the achievements that are essential to the reputation of the plaintiff.”

Netflix relied heavily on an appeal ruling in a similar case involving actress Olivia de Havilland. In that case, de Havilland sued FX Networks for opposing her portrayal in the Ryan Murphy series “Feud”. The Court of Appeal dismissed the suit, finding that the creators had considerable artistic freedom to portray real people. The ruling was well received in the entertainment industry.

The de Havilland incident involves fictional dialogues between actors who play real people. The Court of Appeal ruled that these scenes would be understood as an adaptation rather than a transcribed script from real life. Phillips ruled that otherwise, viewers could leave the show with the false impression that Gaprindashvili had never met a man.

Netflix also states that “The Queen’s Gambit” is “characters and events depicted in this show are fictitious. It is not intended to depict real people or events.” However, the judge ruled that it was not sufficient to dispel the notion that the show was making factual claims.

“Therefore, in context, Netflix[ed] impression that [it] were asserting objective facts,’ wrote Phillips. “Plaintiff asserts sufficiently false that Line is ‘reasonably sensitive to interpretations that imply verifiable false claims of fact’.”

Netflix declined to comment on the ruling.

EDIT: This story originally portrayed Gaprindashvili as a Russian. She is from the Republic of Georgia.
